Information for Referred Patients

Why Have I Been Referred?

In the same way that your GP will refer you to a specialist for investigations and treatment beyond the routine and day to day, your vet has called upon the wealth of experience and knowledge in the care and treatment of animals of all sorts that we at All Creatures have developed over the years.

As well as specialised treatment for domestic pets, half of all the patients we see are exotic animals from reptiles to birds and small mammals. With over 16 years experience, as and as a past president of the British Veterinary Zoological Society, Louise has the skills to lead our team in the successful treatment of referred cases of all sorts; recent cases have ranged from a rabbit with toothache to a tortoise with a bladder stone, from removing a swallowed stone in a tiny axolotl weighing just a few grams to taking x-rays of an emu, weighing considerably more and needing 3 people to lift onto the examination table!

Our practice is fully equipped with the facilities needed to provide the highest levels of diagnosis and care. Examples include a digital X-Ray suite, the latest Sevoflurane anaesthesia equipment and a blood analysis machine developed by NASA that can sample volumes as small as 0.1ml while you wait. We maintain a comprehensive stock of medicines, supplements and foods for exotics as well as domestic pets.

We will obtain case notes from your Vet before you attend, and will provide them with a full report of our findings and treatment. As a referred patient you will receive an extended initial appointment, and quite possibly a cup of tea while we discuss your case.

Notes for referred patients

Always make sure that you bring your animal in a suitable secure container or on a collar and lead.

Small birds should have their cages covered to reduce anxiety; larger birds such as parrots should be brought in a carrier. White paper on the cage floor is useful in case we need to examine droppings.

Aquatic animals should be transported in water from their tank or pond, not fresh tap water, and reptiles should be transported with access to a heat source such as a hot water bottle.

In all cases, take care when handling your pet as they often react differently when in pain; if you are in any doubt, please do not hesitate to call us for advice.
